After moving from Sandy Hook (one of the best birding spots in the country, in my humble opinion) to North Jersey, I was nervous. Where would I bird? Would I still be able to find life birds? Would I enjoy the view? Would these spots have sunset/sunrise potential? Could I escape the noise and dense populations of people in the area?
I have to say, North Jersey gets a bad rep, but don’t believe what you hear! There are unbelievable birding spots in and around Bergen County. Thanks to Bergen County Audubon Society, I’ve been introduced to a few. Here are four of my favorites:
Meadowlands Environmental Center/DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst, NJ
Mill Creek Marsh in Secaucus, NJ
Teaneck Creek Conservancy in Teaneck, NJ
River Barge Park & Marina in Carlstadt, NJ
Hackensack Riverkeeper also runs pontoon boat tours occasionally from River Barge Park & Marina. There is no better way to see the Meadowlands than by boat!
For more birding locations throughout Bergen County, visit Bergen County Audubon Society’s website.
